The Nigerian media must continue to play a central role in ensuring the active engagement of the citizens and upscale conversations as a key stakeholder in the struggle for enthronement of democracy in the country and Africa.
This was the consensus among participants and lead speakers at a media roundtable in Abuja this Thursday on reinforcing the commitment of Nigeria to the implementation of the African charter on democracy, election and governance: media as a catalyst.
The lead speaker, Imoni Amarere said the charter seeks to promote adherence by each state party to the universal values and principles of democracy and respect for human rights, promote and enhance adherence to the principles of the rule of law premised upon respect for, and the supremacy of the constitution and constitutional order in the political arrangements of the state parties amidst other objectives
Other speakers at the round table advised media practitioners to continue to play a central role in deepening democracy in the country and ensure that Nigeria implements the African governance charter and principles of the African charter on democracy, elections and governance.
The media round table which is funded by the European commission was organized by action aid Nigeria to mobilize civil society and media support for implementation of the African governance processes.
